While there are only two types of springs inside the garage, there are a few workable areas where you can put these springs.

The torsion springs are typically on the top of the garage frame.

As the torsion spring mechanism involves rotating an attached cable drum, the torsion rod directly contains the torsion springs.

However, tension springs are more flexible in terms of installation location.

You can put the tension springs at the sides of the frame or parallel to the door opener on top.

No matter which spring you choose in your mechanism, it’s necessary to ensure that these springs are adjusted.

When you need to help with the adjustment, you have professional services in town for the job.

We are Lone Star Garage Doors Austin, and we are here to help you learn how to adjust side mounted garage door springs.

If you want to learn the basics of side mount spring adjustment, then follow the necessary steps.

The spring adjustment doesn’t only start when you change the tension in the springs.

It starts with preparing the garage and yourself.

Step 1: Wear the Proper Protective Equipment before starting the adjustment

Safety is the most crucial factor in the spring adjustment routine.

Find a pair of safety goggles, hand gloves, and protective overalls to wear.

As springs are in high tension, you can’t leave anything at risk for danger.

Wear the PPE that will protect you from potential injury and harm.

Step 2: Disconnect the opener from the door panels

Second, the adjustment happens manually, so it’s best to disconnect the opener.

Accidents can happen when the opener suddenly functions and lifts the door panels while you’re in the middle of adjustment.

Find the emergency release cord and pull the tag to disconnect the motor arm from the top panel.

Lift the garage door manually along the tracks and secure it with clamps; this releases the tension force on the side mount springs.

Step 3: Trace the cable and the spring around the mechanism

Trace the tension cables and safety cables of the springs.

Release the safety cables of the side mount springs, so you are free to move and relocate the spring.

The safety cables are in between the springs, usually attached with hooks in both ends.

Loosen or remove the safety cables from between.

Step 4: Loosen the spring from its current location

One end of the spring will be on the track, attached with a big hook and secured with a nut at the track.

The other spring end will be attached to a pulley that loops the cables.

Since the spring is not under force anymore, you can loosen the nuts that hold the spring in the track.

Adjusting the spring depends on the amount of force that’s appropriate for your mechanism.

Step 5: Attach the spring to a different hole in the track

Higher hole locations along the track mean less tension force.

Lower hole locations mean that there is a greater force when the springs are stretched out.

Decide which location works best with the current weight of your door panels which supports the efficient movement.

Attach the end of the spring to a new place in the track; tighten the nut around the big hook.

Step 6: Repeat on the other side of the garage frame

Repeat the same steps to the other side of the garage frame.

Don’t forget to relocate the safety cables that go with the side mount springs.

Always note that the safety cable hooks should be in the same location as the spring hooks.

As these two go together to ensure extra safety inside the garage, you should never miss adjusting the safety cables as well.
